Potto Grange has been rearing high grade stock for 200 years. Initially beef shorthorn but latterly Pedigree White Galloway- a rare breed, and Aberdeen Angus. These are traditional British breeds, slow maturing, and providing well marbled intensely flavoured beef.
The Farm has been fully organic since 2001 and is registered with the Soil Association.
Calves are born outdoors in the springtime with little or no interference/assistance and suckle their mothers for as long as they wish, which is usually about a year. They spend their time year round on extensive clover-rich organic pasture, and will remain with their herd until such time as they go to the butcher at about 30 months or more.
In the winter months they are fed home grown silage.
The beef is well hung for between 3-4 weeks in a fan cooled cold store at temperature between 2-6 degrees centigrade.
Scotch Blackface have been reared at Potto Grange for at least 100 years. Lately we have incorporated into the flock the rare breed Rough Fell which originates from the borders of Yorkshire and Cumbria and pedigree Texel to increase the meatiness.
The ewes lamb in March /April as the spring grass is coming into its best. The lambs generally stay with their mothers until it is time for them to go to the butcher resulting in tasty tender meat. Depending on the time of year and customers choice the lamb is hung for up to 1 week under the same conditions as the beef.
The permanent pasture supplies not only clover and grass but a variety of herbs giving both sheep and cattle a chance to self medicate as necessary. This results in exceptionally healthy stock and it means the need to use conventional medicine is very rare.
A recent study done at Bristol University has shown that exclusively grass-fed animals are higher in omega-3 fatty acids which are beneficial to health, and have an improved taste and texture compared to concentrate-fed animals.
