About The Farm
The farm comprises of 220 acres of mainly arable land where we grow wheat, oats, field beans, potatoes and vegetables.
We use grass & clover leys and mustard for fertility building crops in our annual rotation. We also have 12 acres of coppiced willows grown on contract for Drax power station to be used as a carbon neutral fuel.
Farming With Nature: Our Wildlife Schemes
The farm is in the Countryside Stewardship Scheme and Higher Level Stewardship Scheme providing areas of land dedicated to wildlife by the planting of crops suitable for winter feeding for birds. This also provides a habitat for and encourages small mammals.
We have an extensive range of birds on the farm, of which we are very proud. We also have a 20 acre wood on the farm, which is the site of an ancient settlement. The wood is home to many wild animals including badgers, deer and foxes and many species of birds.
Organic Farming at Hawthorne House farm started approximately 20 years ago with our first crop of organic potatoes - a variety called Lady Rosetta grown on contract for Hedgehog Crisps. Unfortunately Hedgehog Crisps did not thrive! However, we have gradually increased our organic acreage, and now the whole farm is all organic.
Organic farming prohibits the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers and promotes a less intensive way of farming. Crop yields are generally lower which results in higher prices than conventionally farmed crops. Farming in this way is much more labour intensive.
