Cranleigh Organic Farm Shop

At Lower Barrihurst Farm
We have 98 acres of arable and rough grazing and are in the initial stages of creating a truly mixed organic farm. This includes a vegetable garden and a small woodland that is being enlarged.
The 'Cranley' herd comprises of four breeding sows of the 'Lucky Lass' bloodline, and a boar of the 'Royal Standard' bloodline.
All breeding, farrowing and finishing takes place out of doors. Piglets are weaned at eight weeks and we get two litters per sow per year and an average of eight piglets per litter, sometimes as many as twelve.
We also have chickens for their eggs which we sell in the farm shop.

History of the Farm
Farming at Lower Barrihurst ceased in 1985 when it was sold to a new owner and from then until we bought it nothing was done to the land. In 1993 we acquired the land and from the outset we decided to farm organically. As it was very rich in wildlife and weeds we set about clearing just a few acres at a time. The Tamworth pigs help us in this task as they are very good at reclaiming neglected land. Cereals (barley, oats and triticale) have been grown, milled and fed back to the pigs, chickens and ducks and geese. The farm is now run by Ray and Diana Parker with the help of the occasional WWOOFer

History of the Tamworth Pig
Many of our current traditional breeds were created from a mix of native pigs crossed with imports of Chinese and Neapolitan stock at the end of the18th century. However, at the time the Tamworth was going out of favour due to its slow-maturing characteristics and it is thought that unlikely that it was affected by such crossing. For this reason it has the reputation of being the oldest pure English breed. After World War II the numbers of breeding stock fell dramatically. Today the Tamworth is a Rare Breed with numbers of boars and females remaining relatively static.
The meat of the Tamworth is juicy and very tasty, fine in texture of slightly darker colour than the usual pork and with reliable crackling.

We sell a wide variety of freshly harvested fruit and vegetables.
Organic, free range eggs from own hens.
Frozen and fresh meat:
pork, sausages, bacon, local venison, beef, lamb, chicken and fish.
Pre-packed goods, local milk, cheese and yoghurt.
Turkeys, geese and ducks for Christmas.
